February 25, 2025

One of Japan’s most prestigious awards for chemists, the Nagoya Gold Medal, was presented on January 24, 2025, to Professor Alois Fürstner, Director at the Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung. He thus joins an illustrious group of 25 predecessors, including several Nobel Laureates and Wolf Prize Winners. Among the former awardees is also Prof. Manfred T. Reetz, former Director of the Kohlenforschung, who received the Nagoya Gold Medal in the year 2000.

This Award was founded in 1995 on initiative of Professor Ryoji Noyori and Professor Hisashi Yamamoto; it is made possible through the financial support of the MSD Life Science Foundation (Banyu). The Nagoya Gold Medal is awarded to an organic chemist who has made significant contributions to the field in its broadest sense. The Silver Medal, established in 1999, is awarded in parallel to a scientist based in Japan whose research has also had a major impact on the field of synthetic organic chemistry; this year’s recipient was Prof. Masayuki Inoue from the University of Tokyo.
